Patent Attorney Joins Haynsworth Sinkler Boyd's Charleston Office

Richard A. Brisbin brings his experience to the law firm’s intellectual property practice and government procurement practice. Registered to practice before the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO), Rick counsels clients to obtain, protect, transfer, and enforce intellectual property rights.

He prepares and prosecutes patent applications for clients that operate in a wide range of technologies and industries, such as aerospace, healthcare, telecommunications, software, optics, automotive, energy, and semi-conductors. He also performs patentability determinations, negotiates and drafts business and licensing agreements, and assists clients regarding government procurement and intellectual property portfolio strategy.

Prior to joining the law firm, Rick practiced patent law at a patent firm in the Washington, DC area serving as outside patent counsel for a number of small firms and Fortune 100 firms. He has prepared over 150 patent applications in a broad spectrum of electrical, mechanical and software technology. He also has a professional background in engineering and executive management. He served as a Vice President of L-3 Communications, Inc., where he worked with the U.S. Departments of Defense and Homeland Security. He also held positions in electrical engineering and program management with the U.S. Navy and Lockheed Martin Corporation.

Rick received his J.D. from George Washington University in 1998. He graduated from Virginia Tech University with a B.S. in electrical engineering and State University of New York with a B.S. in physics, both in 1989.
