Haynsworth Sinkler Boyd Adds Andrea Brisbin to Healthcare Team

Governmental and Private Sector Lawyer joins Charleston office

Haynsworth Sinkler Boyd, P.A. has expanded its healthcare practice with the addition of Andrea Heffernan Brisbin who joined the firm May 23 as Special Counsel.

Based in the firm’s Charleston office, Andrea joins one of the state’s largest law firms and its group of attorneys dedicated to serving the healthcare industry. She represents a broad spectrum of healthcare providers, including hospital systems, long-term care services, physician practices, and other healthcare facilities, in matters involving such issues as facility and professional licensure, certificate of need, reimbursement, and provider transactions and operations. In addition, Andrea brings her extensive experience with health regulation policy and will work closely with Haynsworth Sinkler Boyd’s governmental relations subsidiary, Copper Dome Strategies, LLC to meet clients’ needs.

The firm’s healthcare team offers significant experience in joint ventures, mergers and acquisitions, anti-kickback and Stark laws, provider and managed care contracting, organization and governance, medical staff bylaws, HIPAA, EMTALA, certificate of need, clinical research, medical malpractice, risk management, medical ethics, and financing and tax.

In 1994, Andrea began her legal career working as a civilian litigator for the United States Department of the Navy for four years, then as an Assistant Attorney General in the Maryland Office of the Attorney General (1998-2000) serving as counsel to health professional licensing boards. Utilizing her federal and state government experience, she entered private practice in South Carolina in 2000, first with a Charleston-based litigation firm and then with the government and public policy practice group of a regional law firm. Andrea has served as the Chair and a Council Member of the S.C. Bar Health Care Law Section.

A member of the American Health Lawyers Association and DRI (Defense Research Institute, Inc.), Andrea is a member of the South Carolina Bar and its Health Care Law Section; Charleston County and American Bar Associations, and the South Carolina Defense Trial Lawyers Association. She is admitted to practice in South Carolina and Maryland, the U.S. District Courts for the Districts of South Carolina and Maryland, and the U.S. Courts of Appeals for the Fourth and Eleventh Circuits.

A James Island, S.C., resident, Andrea received her J.D. in 1993 from the Columbus School of Law, The Catholic University of America, where she served as Lead Articles Editor of The Catholic University Law Review, and her B.A., magna cum laude, in English from Boston College in 1990.
