July 11, 2011

Haynsworth Sinkler Boyd, P.A. announces that Wm. Howell Morrison has joined the Firm’s Charleston office as a Shareholder, effective July 1.

A third generation lawyer with deep roots in his native Charleston, Howell's practice is mainly concentrated on business litigation. In addition, he maintains an active appellate practice.

Howell is a former federal law clerk and federal prosecutor with experience in complex disputes involving diverse practice areas. In recent years, he has represented clients in various corporate disputes, financial and banking litigation, defense of legal malpractice cases, environmental litigation, eminent domain battles, prosecution of insurance fraud, and insurance coverage disputes. He has defended wrongful death cases to verdict and represented parties in class actions and multi-district litigation. He spent almost a decade representing a nationally prominent firm in a series of arbitrations stemming from the withdrawal of several shareholders, and resulting disputes over clients, fees and assets.

John H. Tiller, the firm’s Litigation Member on its Management Committee, said, “Howell Morrison hit the ground running and is the right litigation partner at the right time for our Charleston office. In this increasingly challenging and complicated business environment, his trial experience in state and federal courts in South Carolina will enhance our delivery of trial services for our clients. With over thirty years of experience, he has represented a wide range of individuals and companies from numerous industry sectors.”

Active in national, state and local professional organizations, Howell is a member of the American Board of Trial Advocates, DRI, and a permanent member of the Judicial Conference for the Fourth Circuit Court of Appeals. He is a former president of the Charleston Lawyers Club and a former secretary-treasurer of the Charleston County Bar Association. He also served on the SC Bar’s House of Delegates, and is a past chair of its Practice and Procedure Committee.

Admitted to practice in South Carolina in 1979, Howell received his J.D., from the University of South Carolina in 1979, and his B.A., cum laude, in English from Washington and Lee University (1976). Before going into private practice, he clerked for The Honorable Falcon B. Hawkins, United States District Judge, in Charleston and served as Assistant U.S. Attorney in Charleston from 1980 to 1984.
