Will Johnson Receives AIJA Past Presidents' Award for Best National Tax Report

October 01, 2015

Will Johnson, a shareholder in Haynsworth Sinkler Boyd’s Columbia, SC office, received the Past Presidents’ Award for Best National Report in the field of tax law at the recent AIJA (International Association of Young Lawyers) Annual Congress held in London.

Will's report addressed the complex income tax situations of athletes and entertainers who compete or perform in foreign countries. Most athletes and entertainers who receive more than minimal payments for competing and performing in the United States are subject to US federal income tax and possibly even state income tax.

Approximately 700 people from 58 countries attended the annual event. In a world that is becoming more interconnected every day, even young lawyers need to be able to call on trusted advisors in multiple jurisdictions. Membership in AIJA allows young lawyers to work with each other on substantive issues and develop a comfort level with colleagues from across the world on whom they can subsequently rely for legal assistance in foreign jurisdictions.

Will is chair of the Firm’s statewide manufacturing industry team and practices in the areas of tax and economic incentive matters.
