Steve Matthews focuses on emerging enterprises in the New Economy.

Mr. Matthews is experienced in a wide range of practice areas including corporate and government finance, mergers and acquisitions, intellectual property, complex litigation, and government and administrative law.  He is included in Chambers USA: America\'s Leading Lawyers for Business in the field of Litigation: General Commercial (2016-2017) and in The Best Lawyers in America© 2017 in the field of Appellate Practice.  Much of his current practice is concentrated in the area of entrepreneurial start-ups where he represents both developers and licensee-purchasers of software, hardware and other innovative technology.  He is also an active litigator in complex corporate, IP, information technology and appellate matters involving mission critical aspects of our clients’ businesses.  Mr. Matthews is also a certified mediator for civil court actions in South Carolina.

As a former managing director of Haynsworth Sinkler Boyd for seven years, Mr. Matthews now draws on that chairman/CEO experience to assist other enterprises in the legal and business aspects of strategic planning and implementation.

President Bush nominated Mr. Matthews to a judgeship on the U.S. Fourth Circuit Court of Appeals in Richmond.  That nomination was one of ten federal appellate court nominations that expired when the 110th Congress adjourned without Senate action.

BEFORE HAYNSWORTH SINKLER BOYD
Mr. Matthews practiced corporate law with the Wall Street firm of Dewey Ballantine in its Washington office, and served in the U.S. Department of Justice during President Reagan’s second term.  At Justice, he advised Attorney General Edwin Meese III and the White House on the selection of nominees for federal judgeships and served as special counsel to Attorney General Meese on the Iran-Contra investIgation.
