Johnson Leads Panel at ABA YLD 2013 Spring Conference

William R. (Will) Johnson, a business lawyer at Haynsworth Sinkler Boyd’s Columbia office, chaired a panel at the American Bar Association’s Young Lawyer Division 2013 Spring Conference addressing the use of tax and other incentives to recruit businesses.

Will's presentation, “How State and Local Governments Use Tax and Other Incentives to Recruit Businesses,” provided an overview of the various tools state and local governments use to attract industry. Joining him were Andy Beshear, a member of Stites & Harbison PLLC in Louisville, Kentucky, and David Humber, an associate with Maynard Cooper & Gale PC in Birmingham, Alabama. In addition, internationally-recognized site consultant Jason Hickey, president of Hickey & Associates, shared examples of how state and local governments have competed in recruiting his clients, and David R. Fenske, vice president of legal and business development for Dayton Rogers Manufacturing Co., offered his perspectives on incentive negotiations from the investor’s point of view.

The American Bar Association Young Lawyers Division Spring Conference was held in Minneapolis, Minnesota from May 16 to 18, 2013. The Division is open to lawyers under 36 years old and those admitted to practice for five years or less.

Will is a member of the economic development team at Haynsworth Sinkler Boyd. A graduate of Wofford College, the University of South Carolina School of Law, and New York University School of Law, he joined the firm in August 2006 and was elected a shareholder in December 2012. He is the incoming president of the South Carolina Bar Young Lawyers Division and was named the South Carolina Bar’s “Young Lawyer of the Year” in 2010.
